Vikings partner with Wooden Spoon

The Vikings Sports Foundation, Widnes Vikings official community charity, is celebrating after being awarded a grant of £9,840 from Wooden Spoon, the children’s charity of rugby, with the objective of getting more young people with a disability participating in sport.

The partnership centres on the delivery of the ‘Spoon Rugby Drive’ project which involves the delivery of a touch rugby coaching and festival programme in five special schools across Halton and Merseyside, and a new disability multi sports club for young people based at the Select Security Stadium.

The project was officially launched by Wooden Spoon Merseyside Chairman Stan Bagshaw, committee members David Reed and Len Lowe and Vikings captain Kevin Brown at Ashley School, Widnes.

Community Integrated Director, Richard Munson said: “I would like to thank Stan and his fellow Merseyside Wooden Spoon committee members for supporting the Vikings Sports Foundation with the ‘Spoon Rugby Drive’ project. We are all firm believers that the power of sport can change lives and should be accessible to all. Our organisations share the same values and we look forward to working further with Wooden Spoon in the future.

Chairman of Wooden Spoon Merseyside, Stan Bagshaw said: “Wooden Spoon is the children’s charity of rugby, both League and Union. We fund life changing projects for disabled and disadvantaged children in the UK and Ireland through the power of Rugby. The Merseyside region of Wooden Spoon are delighted to be involved with the Vikings in helping such a worthy cause.”

The Disability Multi Sports Club will take place on Tuesday evenings from 4.45pm to 5.45pm in the Stadium Fitness Sports Hall at the Select Security Stadium from Tuesday December 8.
