Reid has Warrington Wembley dream

Warrington Town continue on the road to Wembley in the FA Trophy on Saturday, and boss Shaun Reid hopes another dream can come true.

Reid and his side captured the hearts of the town and beyond last season with their historic run to the second round of the FA Cup.

Now he can’t help but dream of Wembley in another competition, as Town prepare to face Basford United in the FA Trophy second qualifying round at Cantilever Park.

Reid said: “We’ll have a full strength team out on Saturday. You don’t get a lot of chances in your career to play at Wembley – it’s what, six games away? Why can’t you dream about it!

“That’s what football is all about, and the dream does come true as we well know in the FA Cup.”

One of Town’s victims in the FA Cup run last season was Conference North side North Ferriby United, who went on to scoop a famous FA Trophy triumph themselves at Wembley later on in the season.

Reid added: “In the cup competitions, on the day it’s how you set up and can you win games. Our players are proving they can win games, whether its an ugly win or a good win. We’ve had plenty of wins in this run, and we’ve been winning 1-0, 2-0, 3-0.

“We’ve got the league, we want to defend the Doodson Cup and then the FA Trophy which is something we want to challenge in as well.

“It’s all looking rosy at the moment because we keep turning results over and you don’t get lucky every week.”

The latest 1-0 win came in the league last Saturday, over pre-season title favourites Bamber Bridge.

That win, coupled with a draw between promotion chasing rivals Spennymoor and Glossop North End, meant Warrington returned to the top of the league.

“With all due respect to the other teams, it’s about what we do. If we win every game, we’ll be champions and that’s a fact.

“There are two ways to set up in football – you either score more than the opposition or try not to concede. If you can get a happy balance between the two, which we seem to be doing, then 1-0 is a perfect example and I’ll take another 27 of them!”

Tuesday night’s postponed Doodson Sport Cup tie at Ramsbottom United has been re-arranged for this coming Tuesday, November 17 (7.45pm kick-off).
