Warrington Town still targeting play-offs, says Carden

Warrington Town manager Paul Carden says the play-offs is still a realistic aim this season despite their indifferent recent form.

A 2-1 defeat at the hands of Barwell on Saturday was the Yellows’ fifth home defeat of the season, which leaves them languishing in 10th place having played a handful more games than many of the teams around them.

Two home games in four days – Sutton Coldfield on Saturday and Blyth Spartans on Tuesday – gives Carden’s men the chance to build some momentum leading up to the busy Christmas period.

He said: “I think it’s still a realistic aim. I think it’s an achievable aim.

“I just think that with the areas that I know we need to strengthen in, it’s key that we try and do that sooner rather than later.”

Carden hasn’t been afraid to shake things up since his arrival, bringing in goalkeeper Tony McMillan to replace hometown favourite Karl Wills between the sticks.

With long-term injuries sidelining key performers Danny Ventre and Gerard Kinsella, midfield trio Sean Williams, Eddie Toner and Mitch Duggan have been brought in.

Another recent addition, striker Danny Hattersley, is still waiting his first goal in Yellow.

But Carden, who dropped down from National League side Tranmere to take the role, is enjoying his time at Cantilever Park.

He said: “I’m really enjoying it. The chairman’s been brilliant. The people around the club have been good.

“We’ve just got to pick it up and take it to where it needs to be.

“It’s not going to be an overnight thing, but certainly over the next few weeks we need to be thinking about improvement and making sure that we’re doing all we can to get up near the top of the league because that’s where we should be.”
