Another graduate uses JDG as springboard in to the sports industry

Intern Sam Whyte has earned himself a full-time position at BetFred, adding to a growing list of people to have used JDG Media as a springboard in to the sports industry.

Recent University of Chester graduate Sam has, off his own back, been working for JDG Media since the back end of 2015 as a Junior Reporter, primarily working on Love Rugby League but also contributing to other client work – and perhaps even more significantly, contributing to the office environment.

His undoubted talent and initiative has now enabled him to land a job with BetFred in Warrington.

JDG MD, James Gordon, said: “It’s been great to have Sam as part of our team for the last six months or so. Offering opportunities through placements, internships or otherwise is always something I have been passionate about, as it is how I myself got in to the industry in the first place.

“While we would have loved to have offered Sam something full-time ourselves, commercial reality unfortunately has to take precedence, but I am delighted that he has been able to land a full-time job, even if elsewhere, in what is an extremely challenging and competitive market for graduates.

“I understand that people are going to have ambitions that far exceed JDG Media – while we are good at what we do, and offer a wide range of opportunities, we are only a small cog in a giant industry with some extremely big names. If we can provide that springboard and stepping stone in to the industry, or for people to take the next step to where they need to be, then that is good enough for me.”

Lecturers from the University of Chester have commented that Sam’s experience at JDG was very important in landing him the role.

Sam joins a growing list of people to have progressed after leaving JDG Media in recent years.

Our first ever intern, Rob Philbin, continues to carve out a successful career as Head of Content at the Latitude Group.

Former employees Bogdan Leonte and Max Holland are now at Sky Sports and MyProtein respectively, while Sam Viller moved on to Betfair.

Alice Stoker, who came to us on a five-week Work Based Learning programme during her second year of university, is now media manager at Wakefield Wildcats.

JDG Media is currently recruiting for a Sports Content and Social Media Apprentice. For more information, click here.
